ABOUT:
Angela Rose Voulgarelis is an artist based in Accord, NY. She received her BFA from the University of California at Santa Cruz and studied painting and contemporary art history at Scoula Lorenzo De'Medici in Florence, Italy.
Her work investigates issues concerning women, drawing on her experiences of motherhood and childhood to explore identity, memory, and loss. She works from found images to depict interpersonal family dynamics, primarily from a child’s perspective. This is to unsettle dominant narratives in the context of the Domestic and offer the viewer intimate portrayals of conflict, vulnerability, and love.
Voulgarelis has exhibited in the US and abroad, and her work is held in several private collections. In 2022, she was shortlisted for the Mother Art Prize, through the UK-based Procreate Project. In 2023, she was awarded an artists' fellowship at the MacDowell colony in New Hampshire, USA. In 2024, she curated a group exhibition entitled M/othering at One Mile Gallery in Kingston, NY; attended a private residency in Poppiano, Italy with her life-long mentors, Rose Shakinovsky and Claire Gavronsky (aka Rosenclaire); and was also awarded an artists' fellowship at the Yaddo Corporation in Saratoga, NY.
