MARK LaRAVIERE
ABOUT:
Mark LaRiviere attended Swain School of Design in New Bedford MA, studying with David Loeffler Smith and graduated from the painting department. He moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design and get an M.F.A. in painting, studying with Paul Resika, Leland Bell and John Heliker. A few years later, he attended the New York Studio School and concentrated on sculpture as well as painting.
While predominantly a painter, he showed work regularly in galleries throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, showing at the Bowery Gallery, The Painting Center, Bill Bace Gallery, the National Academy of Arts and Lori Bookstein Fine Arts as well as galleries and venues across the country. In the 2000’s LaRiviere focused completely on sculpture and began to explore different mediums, carving wood and stone, continuing to sculpt in clay and wax as well as ceramic sculpture. His work in ceramics brought him back to working with color through glazes. Color, texture and surface playing a big part as he works.
"“As a young boy my first experience in the power of art was a visit to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence RI, a few miles from my birthplace in Woonsocket. I felt a deep connection with a carved wooden sculpture of a Buddha and had my first realization that an inert piece of material once crafted in an artist’s hands could communicate a living feeling to others, in this case to me, through the span of hundreds of years.”
