CURRENT EXHIBITION
1053 Gallery is pleased to present What the Eye Learns, an exhibition of works by Trevor Wilson and Jim Zivic, on view in the gallery from May 2 - 31, 2026.
What the Eye Learns invites viewers into a contemplative space where perception slows, expands, and deepens into quiet awareness. Trevor Wilson’s works act as visual thresholds, opening portals that hover between presence and absence. Their intricate fields of multihued tones dissolve fixed boundaries, creating atmospheres that feel at once grounded and infinite. These shifting surfaces encourage the eye to linger, to drift, and to notice subtle transitions that resist immediate comprehension.
In contrast, Jim Zivic’s sculptures - formed from raw, polished coal - anchor the exhibition in material presence. Their dark, reflective surfaces carry a palpable sense of weight, time, and elemental stillness. Where Wilson’s works invite immersion, Zivic’s objects offer gravity, holding space with a quiet, enduring calm.
Together, these works transform seeing into a meditative act. As the eye moves between luminous color and dense material, perception becomes an active, attentive process. Meaning emerges gradually, shaped by duration and focus rather than instant recognition. The exhibition suggests that perception is a practiced sensitivity - a gentle discipline of noticing. Within this balance of complexity and restraint, viewers are encouraged to reflect, discovering an intimate awareness in the space between what is seen, felt, and quietly understood.
