GARY GISSLER
ABOUT:
Deeply informed by pace and process, Gary Gissler’s work quietly invokes chanting, like the murmuring of a mantra, like incantations, like the breath. Engaging the simplicity of a minimalist framework, he cuts apart texts, including classics such as “The Interpretation of Dreams”, “Moby Dick”, “Through the Looking Glass”, “Finnegan’s Wake”, and the Grimms’ Fairy Tales, transcribing, altering, blurring, building, and weaving words along the way. He investigates the fragility of language and its vast capacity to communicate our most complex thoughts, feelings, desires, humiliations, and instincts.
Gissler is an American artist working in New York City and in the Catskills. Most recently exhibiting at a two-person show in Venice, Italy in 2022, Gissler has exhibited widely and has been the subject of many solo shows. His work has been shown in wide-ranging group exhibitions, including those curated by fellow artists such as Nicole Eisenmann and Michelle Grabner. His work is represented in both private and public collections, including the RISD Museum and the Neuberger Museum. He has been awarded a Pollock Krasner Grant and a Chinati Foundation Artist Residency and has been featured in Art in America, Flash Art, Art News, The New Yorker, ArtNet, and others.
